Turmeric is one of the most consumed spices in India โ and one of the most adulterated. A 2023 study by FSSAI found significant levels of adulterants in commercially available turmeric powder from multiple brands and unbranded sources.
What's Actually In Your Haldi
Common adulterants include metanil yellow (a banned synthetic dye), lead chromate (used to enhance yellow colour), chalk powder (to add bulk), cornflour or sawdust (to increase weight), and starch from cheaper sources.
"A simple test: dissolve a teaspoon of haldi in water. Pure turmeric will colour the water pale yellow. Adulterated turmeric will often show bright orange or leave visible residue."
Why Curcumin Content Matters
Curcumin is the bioactive compound in turmeric responsible for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and healing properties. Most commercial turmeric has curcumin levels depleted through poor growing conditions, excessive heat during processing, or dilution through adulterants.
